In the painting, the dervish-looking man is Osman Hamdi Bey himself. Hamdi Bey starts taking his photos when painting, utilizing this picture to depict the surroundings. The Tortoise Trainer Painting is one of the paintings made in this way. The location in the painting is the Green Mosque in Bursa. Osman Hamdi Bey began the first drawing here and later finished the painting with the help of the image taken in his workshop. When we look at the painting, we see a man with a red robe, a beard in a dervish outfit as a humpbacked old man ... In a forgotten room, we see that he examines turtles that eat lettuce. But at first glance, we can see fatigue and pessimism in the eyes of the thoughtful person in the picture. But at first glance, we can see tiredness and negativity in the considerate person's eyes in the painting. On the back, we see a nakkare (a percussion instrument consisting of a small drum) hanging and the connected plectrum is leaning out from his neck, which is one of Mevlevi's four basic instruments. We notice instantly that the individual we saw with his hands in his waist is attempting to train the tortoises with some form of music by blowing reed flute and playing the nakkare. It should not be forgotten that, during the Ottoman era, certain water treatments were performed. Private hospitals were established at that period for individuals with a variety of mental disorders. It was discovered in the source that Osman Hamdi Bey was inspired while creating this painting. When we look at the gravure that appeared in an 1869 issue of the French Le Tour du Monde, we can see that this is precisely the source of inspiration. Osman Hamdi Bey also stated that he had read the journal Le Tour de Monde in 1869 in his letter to his father, who worked in the service of the Governor of Baghdad Mithat Pasha. Therefore, it seems quite possible for Osman Hamdi Bey to be inspired by this work while making his painting “Tortoise Trainer”. We present Osman Hamdi’s immortal work to your taste with the interpretation of Hüseyin Şehri.
